IPS School 42 Tutoring

IPS Elder Diggs School 42 is located in a low-income area of the city’s west side. Many of its students come from homes where reading was not encouraged or a part of family life. Beginning in 1997, members of First Congregational Church have made weekly visits to School 42 to read with and to students. The intent is to develop both reading skills and an appreciation for reading. Perhaps even more importantly, the tutors establish bonds with the students that work both to raise esteem in the student and give the tutor a sense of great reward.
Tutors visit the school at several times during the week and more tutors are always needed. Most of our volunteers assist in Miss Barker’s kindergarten class. Helpers are needed to work individually with students or to assist Miss Barker in the class as a teacher's aide. There are also opportunities to tutor older students if that is desired. For more information about assisting at School 42, contact Margaret Smith at Margaret.smith803@gmail.com.
We also conduct an annual Book Party where students in all of the kindergarten classes attend a party and receive a book. To learn more about the Book Party, contact Sandy Wood at csjlwood@iquest.net.
