Why us?

What are we about? Here are five things we stand for at First Congregational Church:

  1. Our Bibles have no back covers. Figuratively speaking, that is. We believe that God spoke through the words of sacred scripture but that God continues to reveal new truths for people of faith. Never put a period where God has placed a comma.
  2. We like the way God made you. Whatever your race or physical abilities, gay or straight, however God made you is great with us. Jesus didn't turn anyone away, and neither do we. We are an Open and Affirming church.
  3. We love square pegs. If your views don't quite fit into the round holes of conventional creeds or belief systems, we think that's great. We affirm Jesus Christ in many ways and honor diverse opinions and searching questions.
  4. Family doesn't always involve DNA. We are a warm and welcoming congregation where members are truly a part of the family. As one new member said, "I walked in the door and it felt like home."
  5. We think being a servant is noble. We believe God isn't content just for us to find fulfillment for ourselves. God calls us to serve the poor and fight injustice. We tutor at an Indianapolis public school, house the homeless, help a sister church in Nicaragua and in countless other ways, we follow Christ in the service of others.
